Slow Sunday Stitching – 24 September 2023

One more week and September is in the rear view mirror, but Summer Heat is NOT! It is now 105 and probably hit 109 before the end of the day. Not good walking weather. About 92 days now that we have been over 105 degrees topping out one day at 117! Lovely. What I dislike about heat like this is that the heat zaps a body even if you stay inside and never go out. It is like the stupid Chinese Virus shut down that has just about ruined our Country thanks to all the Liberal Idiots running this country! OK – I feel better now!

I have been slowly plodding along with In My Garden project. I have finished one more block and have 4 more to finish! Progress is slow when you purchase the entire seasons of Longmire because it brings on Binge Watching virus! Longmire is difficult to do hand work and keep up with the fast pace series. But today we finished the last two episodes! Ended the same way as it did the first time we watched it – Hummmm!

I have finished the 4 bunnies that fill in the corners. The second picture is the one that I finished this week (other than life’s interruptions). I have 3 more of the blocks to finish by adding the flowers, and the Center block that has some flowers, carrots, and a few leaves. I bet if I really put my mind and fingers to the task I could reach my end of September goal of 20XX. LOL.

The last time I posted was on 27 August 2023 where I discussed the new addition to our home – We have named it The Duck! Clay has been “repairing/upgrading/fixing/adding” things to the Duck that make it better than the manufacturer did. He has found the normal “things” that RV manufacturers normally mess up and there were a bunch on this trailer. But now all are fixed. We will have our Directv, DVD player and of course a Roku Stick! How spoiled can one be. I did 3 videos, but they will not download, so back to the picture taking!

On my reading goals I am behind due to “unforeseen requirements” of life, BCBS, and The Duck. But I have finished Bill O’Reilly’s book on President Trump and now reading Killing the Rising Sun by Bill! I have all of the Killing Series and just received Mark Levin’s new book The Democrat Party Hates America. Bill’s books are great books for History lovers (of which I am) and of course I have numerous political books hanging around. Killing the Rising Sun is all about how the world was in the 1930’s which was the Depression Era in the US, but also Japan taking over land from the Soviet Union in the 1930’s and decisions that FDR made that led to Pearl Harbor bombing and the US entering into World War II and developing Atomic Bomb to stop end WWII. Great reads.

On the quilting front I did make a pillow cover that will also be large enough for a lap quilt in the winter (if it ever gets here). This is for the Duck and is made out of the same fabric as Irish Mist quilt that blends wonderfully on the bed. I put the stars on point to give the blocks a 3D look. Maybe I should have just sewn the star blocks together without the borders, but too late now! LOL Now I need to get the urge to quilt it!

Irish Mist Quilt

Now for the new quilting challenge for the next 7 months. Clay is a member of the Choctaw Tribe in Oklahoma and we donate to their Jones Academy each month. They found out that I am a quilter and showed interest in getting quilts made for the graduating Seniors this school year. There are 10 graduates, 7 girls and 3 boys. So I am going to challenge myself and make those 10 quilts, and we will take The Duck in May 2024 to the Academy (and of course we will stay at Durant Casino and RV) to present them to the Seniors. I am going to enjoy doing this for the young Native American students.

Here is a link to their web site. Clay and I make monthly donations through their Chahta Foundation to Jones Academy. We support the Enhancement Program and the Indian Pony project in memory of Clay’s mother Clara June Barton Cook and his children Daryl and Melissa Cook.

“Jones Academy is a residential school for grades 1st-12th, tribally controlled by the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Founded in 1891 by the Choctaw Nation, Jones Academy is a no-cost American Indian boarding school located four miles north of Hartshorne in Eastern Oklahoma. The school is nestled among 540 acres of rolling pastures and trees at the foot of the Pocahontas Mountains in Oklahoma’s Ouachita Mountain range. Approximately 200 students attend grades 1st-12th each year from tribal nations across the US, in particular our neighboring communities in Oklahoma. There is no fee for students to attend Jones Academy. Admission includes travel, housing, and meals. Jones Academy and its partners are transforming learning experiences for Native youth by helping them discover life pathways and cultivate a sense of cultural identity. Education at this American Indian boarding school isn’t only about book knowledge. It’s also about the life lessons that create mature, balanced, responsible and compassionate adults”

I will continue to attempt to do a short walk in the mornings and bike ride to fill in the 30 minutes of exercise, but today was a day to just do whatever and no exercise as it was hot and high humidity at 6:30 this morning. I am finding out that I am not the only one who is going through the horrible heat that it leaves one tired and not interested in doing anything.

So until next time (and I promise to have pictures and forget taking a video as that won’t upload). Enjoy whatever makes you feel good!

Hugs,

Nanette

    1. Well, I let my Vitamin D go down and that was why I just sat and went from “pillar to post” not focusing on anything! Today I really feel like catching up on things! Hugs and Thx for the compliment Nancy. Hugs

      1. I just traced off some pictures for redwork embroidery. Can’t find pattern for a quilt. Got my cataracts done on both eyes. I am just being lazy but need to do some serious cleaning (someday).Depressed about thecountry.

  1. Hi Nanette! I’ve missed you. I figured you and Clay were out enjoying The Duck. Cute name for it and I love the pillow/throw you made for it. What a great charity challenge for yourself. I’ll check out the links – thanks for sharing them. It’s so nice that you will be able to deliver the quilts for the seniors yourself and stay on the grounds. Visiting the casino isn’t too hard to take either, at least in my book. {{Hugs}} a bunch! I love reading about history, too. I can’t say I’m all that proud of our American ways up to this point. But they are our history whether we like it or not – we can’t change it but maybe learn from it. That seems unlikely, though. ~smile~ Roseanne

    1. Well, those who let their Vitamin D get too low do nothing and say nothing! LOL. I am getting better now! I needed something to challenge me to get back on the road to quilting. I will say that when I drive off our 5 acres that I do not know what country I am living in! We are at a critical point – hope we make it through the next year! Hugs and Thx for missing me.

  3. Your lap quilt is spectacular! Good luck with making those quilts for the graduates, that is so sweet of you. We love the Ouachita Mountains areas – would love to move near them “someday”. Have you actually taken a trip in the “Duck” yet?
My husband loves Bill O’Reilly’s books, he’s read several of them.
I sure hope you get some rain from the storms I see moving slightly toward San Antonio right now. It all formed up south and east of us yesterday, we only got .04 inches while other places got inches and inches!
    Take care, good friend. 🙂

    1. Thank you Linda! No trip yet – still too hot. We have appointments thru October so will let the weather continue to get cooler and head to Rockport! We will be making a day trip in October to look at all the RV parks. Think we have found one that will be just what we wanted. We did get 1 and 1/4″ this week. But not near enough to get us out of the drought! Thx for the comment on my lap quilt!

  4. You know I love your applique bunnies and I think I am going to have to borrow your idea of setting all of my quilting goals to be finished in the year 20XX! I recognized the new quilt’s fabric from Irish Mist right away, and I think it’s wonderful that you’re going to make quilts for those graduates. I just hope you have plenty of time to get them finished so that doesn’t turn into a huge burden of stress on your shoulders. I also hope this ridiculous heat breaks soon so you can enjoy your walks again.

    1. Thank you Rebecca! I will take it slow on the 10 quilts by making one and then quilting it before I start the next one. I will probably go for a 60 x 60 inch lap quilts. I will start feeling better as my Vitamin D dropped due to not being able to be out in the sun more. And shame on me for not doing the Vitamin D lamp more!!!! Oh well. We are going to take a day trip to Rockport this coming month to pick out an RV park that we like hoping to get close to Aransas Bay so we can watch the oyster and shrimp boats going out and coming in. Weather is supposed to break this next week, but not as cold as I want it. Hugs

  5. You packed a lot in this post, Nanette. I so enjoyed reading it. As always your quilting is beautiful to me and I always love the patterns you choose. Clay sounds so talented to be able to fix things up like that and yes, you will have all the comforts it seems. Fun times ahead for the two of you. How wonderful to donate to that unique and special cause too. It is much cooler in the mornings here but sunny every day which is making it a beautiful fall so far. Can’t complain!

    1. YUP, it was the mood I was in. Clay is great developing new ideas. He should have patented some of his ideas. I am looking forward to starting on the quilts for the Graduates. Just starting to look at patterns for them. I let my Vitamin D get too low, that is why I had a bad summer – not enough sun and now I have found some Vitamin D drops and Calcium with D liquid that I seem to be tolerating. I should have realized it was the D, but also the 112 days of over 110! We are still getting 100’s, but next week there is a cool front supposed to come with rain. Hugs and I need to go and comment on your posts that I have missed!
