My 2019-2020 Project List

Greetings from South Texas where we are now enjoying some dry cooler air and I love it. My walk was so enjoyable compared to yesterday when the Humidity was so high! I am slowly catching up on the ‘mundane’ things like updating my Blog and doing this post! Maybe you will see something that sparks an interest for your quilt making projects.

I have been working on reviewing a stack of quilt patterns to work on in the next 2 years (yes I decided that if I chose them now and say 2 years I am ahead of the game) so that I do not feel I have to finish them all (which would be impossible). Here is what I started with and ended with:

Now for the 2019-2020 “List”. I have no time frame for finishing the list just hoping to finish all by the end of 2020. As I studied each pattern I labeled it from an Easy to Complex quilt. This allows me to easily pick out what I want to work on at the time – NO THINKING or INTENSE WORK!

1. Enduring Love by Carol Hopkins book Vintage Legacies. Easy. About a week (I want to remake the borders on this quilt)

2. Make 2 baby quilts – Use Jewel Box Quilt book by Eleanor Burns Easy 2 Weeks.

3. Stonefields – Complete Sections 6 through 10 Rest of the year Easy

4. Feather Star Quilt – Marsha McCloskey – Challenge Quilt: Blue and White Star of Chamble. Fabric is in the drawer by the design board. Plan on a month!

5. Bear Mountain Cabin – Intermediate – Log Cabins, Flying Geese and Bear Paw blocks.

6. Love Warm by Pam Buda – Easy Lots of 2″ squares Scrappy Quilt –

7. Infinity by Eileen Wright in Twist and Turn Bargello Quilts – Red and a Teal One! Maybe Nebula from the same book Intermediate – New Technique

8. Terracina Fabrics – a Panel Play quilt! Will take some up front time for placement and fillers. Use Panel Play by Barbara Becker for ideas on the setting – A fun project Easy

9. Ancient Stars – Sue Garman Requires Lots of Stars and HSTs – Need to decide if I am going to do it all at once, or space it out like a BOM. This quilt requires at least a month or more to make. Intermediate

10. Double Wedding Ring by Sharlene Jorgensen – Templates provided. Intermediate/Advance – At least a month.

11. Lynn Wilder Patterns – Lynns patterns are great and instructions excellent! I will pick one and maybe the wall hanging! Time consuming due to colorway selections.

18. Jelly Roll Book – Both Sides of the Pond. Unique Block Easy Fun to make 2 weeks

Here Comes Grammy

After much contemplation, I decided to make the Grammy Squares from Sew’n Wild Oaks. I felt so guilty about putting it aside (LOL) that I decided to make one block to see if I wanted to REALLY do this!

The block measures 6 1/4″. The fabric is from a Moda line fat quarter pack from 2010. Then a year or so ago I made a Happy Scrappy quilt with Rosemary Youngs. I changed mine around from her pattern thinking I would use a lot of fabric and ordered more of the fabric. It is absolutely amazing how little fabric goes into a quilt when making it scrappy! Here are the fabrics I am going to use.

This bundle is not very well organized so I will do that tomorrow before I start cutting fabric. My plan is to cut out 10 blocks for Grammy Squares and sew them along with my Dresden Heaven. This way I will not become bored!!!

I will now have projects ready to work on while I load a quilt on the long arm and when I get tired, I can go the sewing machine and work on these 2 projects. Happiness is being NUTS, but I seem to be having fun and excited that I have so many choices, quilting, piecing quits, and working on my applique at night!

What more could a quilter want? (30 years to make all the quilts that are waiting in the wings). Have a great evening.

Starting My Dresden Heaven Project

Today I am taking some time out of cutting and sewing to show the process I am following to make Dresden Heaven by Susan Marth. I purchased the pattern and the “Tiny” and “Mini” templates to make the Dresden plates which can be used with all of her patterns. I am using the 1930’s fat quarter fabrics that I had purchased for the FW project that I am not going to make (too many problems with the book).

I cut my 2″ fabric strips for the “tiny” plates and I use my Stripin’ Sews to organize them while I am in the process of cutting the Dresden plates. I noticed the Stripin’ Sews on Lynn Wilder’s Blog on one of her posts which showcased her vendor set up at a quilt show and I asked her about it. (Lynn’s husband makes the Stripin’ Sews so if you are interested in purchasing one, please contact Lynn at sewnwildoaks@gmail.com) I love the Strippin’ Sews for the following reasons, it provides a great way to organize fabric strips, folds down to 3″ x 17″ for easy storage, and is shipped in a heavy-duty cardboard box which is great to have to store the holder when not in use.

And here are pictures of the my first 4″ Dresden plate block! I plan on making all of the “tiny” plates first and then make a decision on the color for the background fabric for the plates. That decision will be easier to make after I have them all made. I do not want to cut up my fabric only to find out my “idea now” would not “be a good idea then”!

I originally purchased the Strippin’ Sews to make Lynn’s Grammy Squares pattern Here, but decided to make the Dresden Heaven quilt first (sorry Lynn). Lynn has a great blog and has some neat patterns to look at on her website.

Today I picked up my new glasses….. OK…. I have learned that when you have a good thing going don’t change it. I use Verilux Physio progressive lens and have for years because they provide the widest “corridor” without distortion and do not make me dizzy (Meniere’s). I was advised that the new “S” lens would have a wider corridor, but not for Nanny! I will have a new set of lens next Thursday (hopefully sooner) made with my Verilux Physio lens and not the latest and greatest “S” lens. I believe the old saying is, “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it”! I do like the new sun shades that clip on with magnets – now those are cool!

Since I am talking about items that I use and have purchased and providing information as to where to purchase them, I thought that I would provide the following statement. This is just to clarify that I am not in business with anyone, I just love to share what I am using and patterns that I really like or dislike.

Dear Jane (Mini) is Here along with Ms Potts

Happy Fourth of July week-end! It will be a hot hot hot one this year. Walking early in the morning at 7:30 AM or so is no better than walking at 10 AM! It is called Sweatsville in Hotsville, Texas.

I have a now finished my list of my UFO’s, with the exception of the Texas quilt blocks that are completed but the setting has yet to be designed! I am hoping that it will be completed in the next 6 months! Of course I did cheat on the house UFO because I sent a nice care package to Jaydee full of 16 each 16″ house blocks along with a few other goodies! Now she has another UFO to work on – LOL.

In late 2014 I joined the Dear Jane Bee with the Austin Quilt Guild. I had made 8 blocks of Dear Jane when I realized that I needed to select a specific color and fabrics if I were going to show it at a judged quilt show. I was not going to do anything special with those 8 blocks, but yesterday I determined that it would make a nice “mini-Jane” wall hanging. I made all of the blocks with machine piecing since I do not like paper piecing (sorry). This morning I looked for one more block to make it a 9 block wall hanging and put the blocks on point. The blocks are 5″ unfinished – 4 1/2″ finished. This is the block that I chose to finish the 9th block. The 9 patches are 2″ unfinished – 1 1/2″ finished!

I cut 1″ strips and made 2 strip sets to make the 9 patches. It is much easier than cutting 1″ squares and sew them together. The Circa 2016 has really helped me in making these small blocks. This block is 5″ unfinished.

Next I will select fabric to fill in the blanks and figure out the cutting for the setting triangles. I will use my “Patchwork Math Using Quilting Design Components” by Lynn Wilder for Sew’n Wild Oaks. She has a great Blog and I would have set up a link but it is not working on this iPad! This is a great little book with all the quilting calculations that are needed at times like this!
