To-Do-Tuesday, Etc.

Let’s have the Etc. first!  Our Weather in South Texas is pleasant I hope it stays this way and that now we can have rain for 2 months to catch up from the ‘no rain’ for 3 months!  AND, this is my 445th Post since I started my Blog (give or take a year or two of “unforeseen requirements” preventing me from posting any quilting.

Yesterday I had a nice meltdown and sat down in my chair on the Studio Porch for a mental stress break and fresh air.  As I sat there calming down, I noticed something about a Praying Mantis or Walking Stick for Texans, that was trying to climb up the leg of our picnic table.  As I studied it and watched it continually try to make its way to the top of the table I took a picture of it.  This little innocent bug was not going to give up no matter what!  A lesson we can all learn in our lives when things look the most bleakest!  Great lesson for me!

OK enough of bugs and stress remedies!

My goals for To-Do Tuesdays #67 from 16 – 23 November will be to finish this quilt!

This week I have finished the 2nd series of Stars for Autumn Jubilee for the last row.  YEA!  A goal reached!

Here are Star Rows 1 and 5 completed.  I am pleased!

I will be working on the Trees, Leaves, and Pumpkin Blocks for Rows 2, 3, and 4.  Then the fun on the setting and border.  I have a few things in mind – will see if the creativity is still available!  LOL

My friend Jaydee Price does not have a blog, but she is a proficient Quilter and Knitter!  She has designed many quilts and has one displayed in George W. Bush’s Library in Texas.  (We are no longer a fan of his but the quilt remains in the Library to be admired by others).  A month ago she showed me a wall hanging that she had designed but had not quilted it.  I told her when she is finished to send me pictures and I would tell the story for her.  To me it is a striking pattern, and the colors used make the applique stand out.  The background is so different from normal subtle backgrounds.  Jaydee and I are both traditional quilters when it comes to applique – we are the “no Glue Gals”!  She does scrappy so much better than I and I think she really hit this one out of the park!   Coxcomb Wall Hanging was designed, hand appliqued, and hand quilted by Jaydee!  Congratulations Jaydee on a beautiful piece of artwork!

  3. Nanette, such beautiful seam allowances at the end of each and every point…you are a marvel of precise quilting! I will strive for the same now with my new sawtooth stars.
    And your friend’s quilt is just beautiful!

    1. Morning Jocelyn, running a little behind on answering comments. I pin and sew on a slow stitch because I tend to “trail off” at the ending of each seam. When I make HSTs I usually add 1/8″ to the stated size to cut (like 2 7/8″ squares – I cut 3″ squares). Then I cut them diagionaly and sew a scant 1/4″, not a full 1/4″@ seam allowance. Another tip – all sewing machines sew a different 1/4″ so always check your seam allowance.

      @A scant 1/4 inch is 1 thread width less than the 1/4″ on a ruler or seam when stitching.
      It will make a huge difference when trying to make sure that you have a 1/4″ on the outside points of a block.

      A lot of quilters use Thangles for HSTs, or they paper piece – I do neither. Hugs

  5. Hi Nanette! Those stars!!! Love each and every one of them. Those fabrics are fab. Your friend’s quilt is just gorgeous. It is very striking and the background really gives it a unique vibe. It has a little bit of a voice but it allows the applique to take center stage. I’m so glad to hear the weather has cooled off.   11. Jaydee’s quilt is exquisite! I love that she used lime green thread to give a hint of color. That it is hand quilted and hand appliqued is amazing to me. Her fabric choices for the coxcombs and split leaves are beautiful, and it all looks so good on that pretty background fabric. Standing ovation!
    I love your fall stars, and especially love the leaf fabric in that 4th star of your photos. You need to teach a class in points.
    I still love George W but have been very disappointed in him lately. 😦

    2. I used to teach applique and had a basic table runner that covered all the basics in beginning quilting. Most quilters want to just slap something together and get done, me – I am just the Type A perfectionist. I do not use thankless or paper piecing at all.

      Anyway – a few tips of how I do it. Of course, I am a math lover and a lot are not. So precision is important to me. I have been know to remake quilts if they do not come out perfect and it is not past me to contact a Designer who puts out a pattern that has numerous problems! LOL
